Denver Zoo's Animal Health department has an opportunity for a full time Associate Veterinarian to provide veterinary care for animals at Denver Zoo, by medically managing cases, performing surgery, administering a preventive health program, performing necropsies, and mentoring students. Candidates must have a DVM/VMD from an AVMA accredited institution, four years of post graduate veterinary experience, three years of experience with non-domestic species and ACZM board certification.  Consideration may be given to applicants that meet all other requirements, but employment will be contingent on sitting for the ACZM boards within 24 months of employment.

In this role, you will: 

  • Provide high quality veterinary care to all animals in Denver Zoo's collection, including preventive medicine, advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques, surgery, and emergency response.
  • Communicate with members of the Veterinary Department and other teams by reviewing keeper reports, attending organizational staff meetings, participating in daily rounds, and helping to organize the hospital schedule.
  • Communicate about animal health, welfare, and patient management to appropriate parties, including curators, supervisors, keepers, and veterinary staff.
  • Schedule medical procedures, as appropriate, including coordination with outside consultants.
  • Perform chemical and physical restraint, when needed, to animals in the collection. This includes the appropriate and safe usage of a wide variety of potentially dangerous drugs.
  • Help to manage the zoo's preventive health care program through routine examinations, vaccinations, parasite management, and management of acquisitions, dispositions, and quarantine.
  • Ensure the welfare of the animal collection through application of practical knowledge of taxon-specific veterinary principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Generate and maintains all medical records, including legally-required inventories of controlled substances.
  • Engage with the public through programs organized at the zoo hospital and elsewhere.
  • Develop networks with experts and consultants outside Denver Zoo.
  • Share responsibility to maintain the strict standards of medical sanitation in all medical facilities and equipment maintenance.
  • Provide veterinary support for conservation and research activities as needed.
  • Assist to maintain hospital facilities to ensure that they comply with federal regulations, AZA accreditation and safety standards.
  • Perform gross necropsy examinations and submits tissue samples for histopathology.
  • Assist with teaching of students, volunteers, vet staff, and other members of the Denver Zoo team.
  • Assist in development of animal training for medical procedures.
  • Contribute articles for in-house publications, presents at national and international meetings, and publishes in peer-reviewed professional journals.
  • Participate in other Denver Zoo programs when possible and applicable.

The Successful Candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • DVM or VMD from an AVMA accredited institution.
  • Four years post-graduate veterinary experience; three years of experience with non-domestic species.
  • ACZM board certification; consideration may be given to applicants that meet all other requirements, but employment will be contingent on sitting for ACZM boards within 24 months of employment.
  • Able to obtain a Colorado Veterinary license and USDA accreditation within 3 months of hire
  • Eligibility to obtain a DEA controlled substance registration certificate.
  • Continues education requirements as mandated by the Colorado Veterinary Licensing Board.
  • Able to maintain a solid, positive, and productive working relationship with the Veterinary Department, other Denver Zoo departments, volunteers, city and state agencies, the public, and the media.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to perform diagnostic and surgical skills in a wide variety of non-domestic species.
  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and evenings, including on-call availability at all hours.
  • Computer competent including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, and networks.
  • Clear driving record.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
