Denver Zoo's Veterinary Medicine Department has an opportunity for a Relief Veterinarian to provide veterinary care for animals at Denver Zoo, this position performs medical and surgical management of cases, administration of a preventive health program, performs necropsies, and mentors veterinary students.   This position is a temporary position working 5 days/week for 12-16 week, starting in June.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide high quality veterinary care to Denver Zoo animal collection, including preventive medicine, routine and emergency medical and surgical care. Skills for all zoo species include restraint, anesthesia, medical care, surgery, and preventive medicine.
  • Communicate about animal care and medical issues by reviewing keeper reports, attending organizational staff meetings, participating in daily rounds, and helping to organize the veterinary schedule.
  • Perform gross necropsy examinations and submit tissue samples for histopathology.
  • Help manage an active preventive health care program through management of acquisitions, dispositions, and/or quarantine as well as routine vaccinations, examinations, and anthelmintic administration programs.
  • Ensure the welfare of the animal collection through application of practical knowledge of taxon-specific veterinary principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Communicate regarding animal health and welfare concerns, including case management and details, to animal managers, keepers, veterinary staff, and nutrition staff.
  • Generate and maintain all medical records, including legally-required inventories of controlled substances.
  • Perform chemical and physical restraint, when needed, to animals in the collection. This includes the appropriate and safe usage of a wide variety of potentially dangerous drugs.
  • Share responsibility to maintain the strict standards of medical sanitation in all medical facilities and equipment maintenance.
  • Assist in maintaining hospital facilities to ensure that they are in compliance with federal regulations, AZA accreditation and optimal safety standards.
  • Adheres to and promotes Denver Zoo's mission, core values, and strategic initiatives.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Denver Zoo's Safety & Sustainability Policies by adhering to all environmental, safety, & health regulations, procedures, and goals.
  • Value and consistently apply Denver Zoo's ROADMAP (Reaching Our Audiences by Developing Mission Aligned Programs) process and resources in engaging and educating guests at Denver Zoo
  • Performs various tasks as assigned.

Our ideal candidate will have the following qualifications.

  • DVM or VMD from an AVMA accredited institution.
  • Four years of post-graduate veterinary experience with three years of experience with non-domestic species.
  • ACZM Board Certification or Eligibility is preferred
  • Able to maintain a solid, positive, and productive working relationship with the Veterinary Department, Animal Care Department, Nutrition Department, and hospital staff, animal care department, other zoo departments, volunteers, city and state agencies, the public, and the media.
  • Strong interpersonal skills as well as oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to perform diagnostic and surgical skills in a wide variety of non-domestic species.
  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and evenings, including on-call availability at all hours.
  • Computer competent including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, and networks.
