Denver Zoo's Horticulture department has an opportunity for a Horticulture Intern.  Under general direction of the Horticulture Team interns will maintain ornamental gardens, containers, and animal yards at Denver Zoo. Work includes but is not limited to: propagation, pest management, mowing, mulching, weeding, watering, pruning, transplanting, and planting along with all other general maintenance tasks associated with gardens and animal yards. Applicants are expected to be able to work outdoors for long periods without sitting in a wide range of weather conditions. Applicants will also complete an internship project during their employment that relates to the field of zoo horticulture. This internship is budgeted for (9 Weeks) May 7- July 13, 2018. Unofficial college transcript(s) and two (2) letters of recommendation are required.

 Essential Functions:

  • Inspects, maintains, and conducts routine maintenance of gardens, containers, and animal yards at Denver Zoo to reflect a high degree of horticultural care.
  • Ensures pathways and patios are clean and accessible for visitors.
  • Performs horticultural care and maintenance work such as watering, weeding, trimming, pruning, dead-heading and minor repair of garden irrigation systems.
  • Completes a zoo horticulture related project and presentation to zoo staff and volunteers at conclusion of internship.
  • Adheres to and promotes Denver Zoo's mission, core values, and strategic initiatives.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Denver Zoo's Safety & Sustainability Policies by adhering to all environmental, safety, & health regulations, procedures, and goals.
  • Value and consistently apply Denver Zoo's ROADMAP (Reaching Our Audiences by Developing Mission Aligned Programs) process and resources in engaging and educating guests at Denver Zoo.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Attends weekly presentations, lectures, and/or field trips as assigned by Horticulture Team.
  • Works with all departments to assure highest quality experience for all visitors at Denver Zoo.
  • Maintains courteous working relationships with managers, co-workers, volunteers, and others.
  • Maintains a positive, helpful and solution-oriented demeanor when responding to or serving members and visitors.
  • Performs various duties as assigned.


  • Must be enrolled in college or trade school with focus on horticulture or a related field.
  • At least six months experience in similar garden and landscape maintenance environment preferred.
  • Must be familiar with use of hand held tools.
  • Must be able to read and understand instructions, simple diagrams and schematics.
  • Should have some working knowledge of machinery (mowers, trimmers, and small engines).
