Denver Zoo's Guest Experience has an opportunity for a full time Creative Director of Guest Experience to bring unique guest experiences to life by leading a team of highly creative project personnel and collaborating with a variety of teams and departments throughout the organization.  The Creative Director of Guest Experience is responsible for overseeing and driving the creative experience, presenting the overall vision, layout and narrative, and ultimately directing and establishing the creative 'story' for Denver Zoo initiatives including major events (Zoo Lights, Fall Festival, Boo At The Zoo) and temporary exhibitions.

Essential Functions:

  • Leads story development, strategic brainstorming sessions and direct creative execution for a variety of Zoo wide initiatives including temporary and seasonal exhibits, annual fall festival and Zoo Lights.
  • Acts as "vision-keeper" for the initiative team responsible for driving the creative vision through all phases of the project- creating a concept, developing the vision, art directing, executing big-thinking and integrating ideas- ensuring the initiative delivers the intended guest experience.
  • Effectively manages projects in a matrixed environment.
  • Advises Denver Zoo's guest engagement team on set and interpretive graphic development.  
  • Oversees prioritization for internal production team and outsourced resources.
  • Actively mentors the production team by recognizing where each member is in their careers, where they want to go and support their development.
  • Ensures that each project has the specific financial and staffing resources it requires to be successful
  • Works with production manager and coordinators to identify and procure talent and resources necessary to complete the project.
  • Acts as project liaison as needed with internal and external partners, licensors, and intellectual property owners.
  • Adheres to and promotes Denver Zoo's mission, core values, and strategic initiatives.
  • Value and consistently apply Denver Zoo's ROADMAP (Reaching Our Audiences by Developing Mission Aligned Programs) process and resources in engaging and educating guests at Denver Zoo.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Denver Zoo's Safety and Sustainability Policies by adhering to all environmental, safety, and health regulations, procedures, and goals.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Performs various duties as assigned.


  • BA in a related field.
  • 7+ years experience in creative production, theme park, cultural attraction, show or resort management, art direction including experience acting as a supervisor for other creatives.
  • Strong design, production and management portfolio.
  • Knowledge of various show technology, set and scene design and entertainment production is an asset.
  • Highly experienced using Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of theme park and attraction technologies including ride, A/V, robotics, engineering, and various show systems.
  • Knowledge of theme park related architectural, project management, organizational, and production/construction practices.
  • Skillful storyteller with the talent to engage audiences and elicit emotional responses.
  • Ability to communicate complex artistic ideas through a combination of written and visual products.
  • Strong aesthetic sensibilities and storytelling skills to support the creative process and to facilitate positive and productive communication between all disciplines.
  • Strategic and innovative thinker and problem solver.
  • Advanced skills in collaborative communication and team leadership.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Decisive- must be able to quickly compare and measure opportunities and make several decisions at once.
  • Strong knowledge of spatial composition and show design principles.
  • Competent technical ability with design techniques and tools including show set and scenic design, architectural design and/or others.
