Denver Zoo's External Relations Department has an opportunity for a full time Public Relations Coordinator to provide strategic communications outreach to key stake-holders via media, direct mail, newsletters and in-person communications.

Essential Functions:

  • Represent Denver Zoo as one of the on-call spokespersons qualified to be on camera, radio and in print.
  • Build relationships with media to ensure positive coverage of Zoo.
  • Identify and pitch media stories supporting Denver Zoo goals, objectives and imperatives.
  • Write and distribute compelling press releases that result in positive media coverage of the Zoo.
  • Support Communications Manager by helping coordinate daily schedule of communications channels.
  • Serve as one of the primary writers for ZooNet digital magazine.
  • Mine Zoo staff for compelling stories; research and write synopses of stories.
  • Provide creative input for social media campaigns and activations.
  • Provide editing, proofreading support as assigned.
  • Support External Relations Department with media events.
  • Write and edit blogs, speeches, presentations and letters.
  • Write marketing materials to support donor solicitation, annual appeals, membership solicitations, direct mail pieces, email invitations, event promotions and promotional signage.
  • Represent Denver Zoo at meetings as assigned.
  • Produce other print communication products as assigned.
  • Must maintain flexible schedule to accommodate coverage of events as assigned, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Adheres to and promotes Denver Zoo's mission, core values, and strategic initiatives.
  • Value and consistently apply Denver Zoo's ROADMAP (Reaching Our Audiences by Developing Mission Aligned Programs) process and resources in engaging and educating guests at Denver Zoo.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Denver Zoo's Safety and Sustainability Policies by adhering to all environmental, safety, and health regulations, procedures, and goals.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Performs various duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or similar field.
  • 2-3 years of experience in a PR setting.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including proficiency in AP Style.
  • Strong marketing writing skills to promote products, services and promotions.
  • Previous media or media relations experience is a plus
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at one time.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Creativity and innovative thinking skills.
  • Respect for confidentiality.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Bilingual candidates encouraged to apply.
  • Preferred knowledge of photo and video production.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands for this position are low. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk and listen.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to maneuver handle or feel objects, tools or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance; also, reach, stoop and kneel.  Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception vision and ability to adjust focus. The position requires both mental and visual concentration.

Work Environment:

This position requires a substantial amount of contact with staff, volunteers, and other departments. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and chemicals.  The noise level in the work environment is usually low to medium.
